Creating a pattern and using it

There are many different ways on making patterns but for now, I will teach you how to make a diagonal line and saving it as one of your patterns.

First, you will need to create a new canvas, making it 10x10. Make sure that your "background content" is set to "transparent" like so:

Next, zoom in as close as you can to your image. On your left side, there should be a tool bar. Where your brushes icon is, right-click on it, and select the pencil tool.

Go back to your canvas, and using the pencil tool (also, make sure the color's in black), create a diagonal line like this:

Afterwards, go to Edit>Define Pattern.

It should pop up a window asking you to name your pattern. I named it Diagonal line.

Now, to use it, open up a picture you want to add a pattern to. For this, I will use this picture of Tim Armstrong. You may also use this photo for this tutorial.

Create a new layer by selecting the "new layer" icon on your layers box, or simply press Shift+Ctrl+N. Then go to Edit>Fill.

A pop up window will show. Make sure that Use is under Pattern. If its not, click on the drop down menu and select Pattern. Underneath that drop down menu, select your custom pattern and press OK.

Your image should now look like this:

Next, go to layer 1, right-click, and select Blending Options.

A window should pop up, and under Blending Mode, click on the drop down menu and select Soft Light then press OK.

And presto! All done. Your final product should look like this:
